Inside the List: DigitalEra Group Fights Against Ransomware

As published by the South Florida Business Journal, check out the following interview done to DigitalEra Group’s President & CEO, Patrick Dyer.

MIAMI, FL. – October 11, 2019 – As DigitalEra prepares to celebrate its 20th year of business, the company can boast rapid growth.

With a near 25% increase in revenue between 2017 and 2018, the Miami-based technology company is one of the fastest-growing in the region.

“We really want to solve the problems of our customers, and keep them safe [from the threat of ransomware],” co-founder and CEO Patrick Dyer said. “I think that’s one of the main factors that helps us grow.”

DigitalEra, which describes itself as a cybersecurity integrator, provided solutions and protections for large companies across various industries.

Dyer always knew he’d work in technology. “It’s in my DNA,” he said. “My father has been a technology guy all his life. I started my career in tech with a company he created.”

Dyer worked at Microsoft before realizing that being in the corporate tech world wasn’t the right fit for him.

“I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and I told my father that I think there’s an opportunity around cybersecurity,” he said.

In 2000, Dyer and his father, Cliff, co-founded DigitalEra. Dyer admits that the timing wasn’t the best. It was just after the start of the dot-com crash of 2000, but they pushed forward with their business.

“One of our advantages has actually been that we are a boutique shop,” he said. “Technology moves so fast that you really have to be nimble and ready for change, and being boutique allowed us to be a chameleon and change when we needed to.”

DigitalEra most recently pivoted its focus on service by opening managed security and incident response practices. They allow the company to be “in the battlefield,” Dyer said, and really see what’s going on in cybersecurity from a different angle.

Like many of his peers, Dyer anticipates that the threat of ransomware will not disappear anytime soon. He worries that one of the underlying problems in cybersecurity isn’t being addressed.

“There is a problem on the supply chain side,” he said. “A lot of products are being manufactured in different countries where malware is sometimes embedded during the process.”

Despite his concerns, Dyer is confident about the future of the industry and his business.

“This is our passion,” he said. “The threat of ransomware isn’t going away, and neither is our desire to fight against it.”
